10 Simple and Delicious Puree Recipes for Babies

Jul 30, 2023 | Around the House, Recipes

Introducing solid foods to your baby is an exciting milestone filled with wonder and curiosity. As a parent, you want to ensure your little one receives the best nutrition and a smooth transition into this new milestone. Starting with simple purees is a fantastic way to get started on this journey, allowing your baby to experience new tastes and textures gradually. In this post, I’ll be sharing 10 simple and delicious puree recipes that our babies loved when they were starting solids.

It’s important to note that opting for purees does not mean you have to exclude other feeding approaches, such as baby-led weaning. In fact, the two can complement each other beautifully. If your approach is baby-led weaning, it doesn’t mean skipping purees altogether; it’s all about offering a variety of options and letting your baby lead the way. One approach doesn’t have to replace the other, and you can even combine them to cater to your baby’s preferences.

The approach we took when introducing purees is allowing our twins to take charge with a preloaded spoon. It may sound a bit messy, but allowing them to self-feed fosters their independence and fine motor skills. Embrace the adorable mess and let them explore the new tastes and sensations at their own pace.

Items we used that helped us get started in solids

As you embark on your baby’s journey into the world of solid foods, having the right tools can make the experience even more enjoyable and convenient. We’ve compiled a list of essential items that will help you introduce those first purees to your little one.

  1. Nutribullet Baby: A reliable and efficient baby food maker like the Nutribullet Baby can simplify the process of preparing fresh and nutritious purees for your little gourmet. Its compact design and powerful blending capabilities make it a perfect addition to your kitchen.
  2. Suction Silicone Bowl: A suction base on the bowl ensures stability during mealtime, minimising spills and messes
  3. Tommee Tippee Smushee – First Self-Feeding Spoon: this is a good introduction to spoon since babies don’t know how to scoop yet. Baby can grip it anywhere and use both ends to dip into food. The textured edges help hold onto food so eventually it ends up in their mouth.
  4. Silicone Spoon: As you let your baby take charge of their eating experience, they will eventually be able to use a silicone spoon to scoop food from their bowl. Silicone spoon is a good choice as its soft and flexible material is gentle on delicate mouths.
  5. Waterproof full sleeve baby bib: Starting solids can be a messy affair, but a waterproof bib can save both you and your baby’s clothes from accidental spills and splatters. Look for one with a front pocket to catch any dropped food.
  6. Bumbo 3-in-1 multi seat: A Bumbo seat provides extra support and stability for your baby during feeding sessions. Its ergonomic design helps them sit upright comfortably, making it an excellent choice for those early solid food encounters.

10 Simple and Delicious Puree Recipes for babies:

1. Rice Cereal Puree

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup brown rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1-2 cups liquid for blending (fresh breast milk, formula or water)

Instructions:

  • Rince the rice at least twice
  • Transfer to a medium saucepan and add 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to low, cover with a lid and simmer for 35-45 minutes or until the rice is tender and the water is evaporated. Each batch of rice cooks a little differently, so taste at 35 minutes to see if the rice is tender. Or you can just use a rice cooker if you have one
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and let rest for 10 minutes, covered. If using fresh breast milk or formula for blending, remove the lid and let the rice cool for 15 minutes.
  • Place the rice into the nutribullet baby batch bowl and add 1/2 cup of liquid of choice. Blend for 1-2 minutes on medium-high speed until completely smooth and creamy, adding in the additional liquid in 1/4 cup increments, if needed, until you have your desired consistency.
  • Serve warm (not hot!) or freeze for later.
